Match report: England women make T20 Flickit Cricket history
In a thrilling and historic match England women’s T20 team, captained brilliantly by Rosalind Moody, made Flickit Cricket history today, beating the England men’s team by a single run.
Mady Villiers was the hero of the hour when she flicked the dice into the 20 Runs scored Flickit Cloud on her fifth attempt of eight possible tries. Her first four tries were either short or long of the mark, but she steadied and composed herself well to flick with accuracy and precision to secure a thrilling win for the women.
Things were not looking good for the women after a mid order batting collapse. Chasing 261 for victory, the women started well with Danni Wyatt making 40 before she was brilliantly caught. Captain Courageous Rosalind Moody batted extremely well for her 62, but the momentum of the match swung towards the men when Rosalind was skilfully Run Out with a direct hit to the stumps. Sciver, Knight and Wilson all went cheaply but a spirited fight back by tail enders Ecclestone, Shrubsole and Brunt made victory a possibility.
When Sarah Glenn was magnificently caught for just 7 runs, Mady Villiers came to the wicket needing 19 runs for the tie or 20 runs for victory. Under the rules of Flickit Cricket the number 11 batsman must perform the Batsman’s Flick scenario. The men’s captain Scott Moody rolled the dice and Villiers was given eight attempts to achieve the victory. Asked about how she was feeling when lining up the flick attempts Rosalind Moody, flicking for Villiers, said, “I was starting to feel more confident with my flicking ability. I was lucky to be given eight attempts so I was feeling relatively relaxed. The men’s captain Scott Moody was doing his best to put me off my game by sledging me, but I blocked him out and focused. I was jumping for joy when my 5th attempt settled within the cloud.”
Scott Moody (45 runs) and Moeen Ali (44 runs) top scored for the men’s team. After the match captain Scott Moody said, “All credit to Rosalind and her team, the women played very well today and deserved their win. We had our chances but didn’t take them; my flicking accuracy was a little off today. If you don’t take your chances in this game then you can get punished and we were punished today. You could argue that we didn’t get the roll of the dice, but I don’t want to make excuses.”
The women take a one nil lead into the second match which will happen sometime this weekend. Let’s hope that match is as exciting and thrilling as this one.
